  15. <p>An AIDS drug is approved
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    The Food and Drug Administration announced last October that
  18. it would allow promising but unproven treatments for AIDS to
  19. move onto the market more swiftly than other new drugs. Last
  20. week the agency made good on that promise. It said it would
  21. approve an aerosol drug, pentamidine, for treatment of a deadly
  22. form of pneumonia that is a leading killer of AIDS patients.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>    The move is a major departure from the FDA's traditional
  25. practice of requiring rigorous tests, which can take up to seven
  26. years, to establish a drug's safety and effectiveness before
  27. granting approval. Black-market versions of the aerosol
  28. pentamidine have circulated for years, but the treatment has
  29. been studied in controlled clinical tests only since July 1987.
  30. The change of policy came after organized protests by AIDS
  31. patients, who argued that the Government's stringent
  32. regulations were blocking access to potentially lifesaving
  33. medicines.
